Thanks for all of your help so far. I put a debug dongle at http://www.mvpmc.org/~bugscreen/updates. Once you've run the trace and before you stop anything please check the trace for the following line:

event thread started (pid <somepid>)

telnet to your mvp and run top to see if the thread exists and if its running. Let me know what  you find and send me the trace. I've disabled two different events from being processes so your watch recordings and upcoming recording lists won't update dynamically but this should eliminate and problems with the associated event processing.

Just out of curiosity, I've also uploaed a dongle compiled with the new kernel with no debugging traces at all. If you have the time, could you give that one a try as well? It will have a -2.4.31 rather than the -2.4.17 at the end.
