If all you're trying to do is restart the server when it crashes then create a small wrapper that spawns the server and just keeps re-spawning it when it exits. You can then create an init.d script to start and kill the wrapper. The code is fairly simple and can be hacked together in about an hour. This keeps security clean since no one is given access to perform the restart.
