Glad it's working for you, but I'm surprised that you're having trouble
with stuttering given the spec of your machine - a Duron 2400 is what,
about 1.6Ghz?. 

I'm using an Athlon XP 2400+ box (2Ghz) as my VLC machine and it can
happily do DVD quality with a bitrate of 8192 (you can override the
preset video/audio bitrates too in that menu or with the --vlc-vb
option).

That machine has 768MB RAM, plays movies from a remote NAS device, runs
Debian Unstable and is also my OpenVPN, SSH, Apache, BIND, DHCP, MySQL
and Slimserver box!
