Hmm... this has a familiar ring to it.  When I was struggling to get 
my H2 unit working with mvpmc, I was initially trying to use the tftp 
server that came with my distribution (SuSE 10).  I had no success 
until I gave up on this approach and installed the aftpd package, and 
ran it as described in the wiki: http://mvpmc.wikispaces.com/hxhowto
I never did figure out why the other tftp server couldn't do the job.

Another issue I had was with the firewall configuration on the server.  
I tried poking holes for the appropriate ports, but the MVP still 
would not boot until I removed the firewall restrictions completely 
(not a security issue, since this was just on my internal LAN).

I later acquired a second MVP, an H3 unit, and it was plug 'n play 
after a small addition to my DHCP server config.
