Thanks a ton for the help Roger.  I ended up upgrading to Ubuntu 8.04
instead of Ubuntu 8.10 because 8.04 still uses VLC 0.8.6.  The 0.9.x
series of VLC seems to be the thing that was giving me problems.

So it appears that MVPMC isn't compatible with the 0.9.x versions of
VLC then, right?

P.S. Also, just in case anyone else was interested, compiling the
0.8.6 version of VLC on Ubuntu 8.10 proved to be very, *very*
difficult.  After spending at least 4 hours on the project, I finally
gave up.  I may not be the savviest Linux user in the world, but I've
compiled my fair share of software before, and have *never* had this
many issues.  VLC's numerous dependencies, coupled with Ubuntu's
weirdness about codecs made everything very difficult.
