You are right, it's certainly possible to use an arbitrary font if you

your font choice: with the default font for japanese characters (AR PL 
UMing HK) these characters are properly rendered.

Unfortunately it is a quite tedious job to find a suitable font for some 
code range. The font should look good (for cjk fonts I am probably a 
pretty bad judge) and have a good coverage of the respective unicode 
range. Not to mention that the font needs to be open source and ideally 
easily obtainable...
