I have the same problem... The username and password are for the wiki login not for the HTTP authentication. We have a private wiki secured with .htaccess for internal documentation. There seems to be a problem with HTTP Basic authentication within the mwlib. I found a solution in the following thread but it does not seem to be implemented at the moment:
