Mark, I think you hit the nail on the head with your 2nd question. The average MLO user. I don't think the average MLO user exists. None of us here are the average "user", most of us are very specific professionals with very specific needs and desires, most of which we are able to communicate quite eloquently.
Question 1: No I have never, ever in being a professional project manager for capital projects (up to $25,000,000) have a project come in according to the original Gantt chart. With that said however, using Gantt charts and WBS as the orginal break down, planning and budgetting tool has helped to establish a baseline, from which to manage from. In the end being a PM is 70% people, and 30% change management. Having a graphic tool that shows you what a small action in week 1 of the project will do to the end or to the bottom line is very helpfull. The graphic nature of a Gantt chart is also very useful as a communication tool, especially for an audience that is already pre-familiarized with the method (think contractors, mechanics, architects). Question 2: The benefit would be similar to some of the tools ToodelDo provides, the autoscheduling tool. There would be a graphic interface that shows if what I have planned in my head, actually has a reasonable change of success. Example, showing a list of tasks connected to a project that have me committed to that project for 80% of my time for the next 4 weeks is not very realistic. In the end, and Is ee this with a lot of the features requested, I believe there are more important things for Andrei to worry about than Gantt charts, but this because if I need Gantt charts I have multiple tools available to me that are better at PM and at Gantt charts than I foresee MLO ever being [no offense Andrei](and again back to the topic of there be NO average user). However I cannot just sit back and see Gantt charts being discarded as a blanket statement. They do serve a purpose, but they simply might not serve your purpose.
