I had a similar problem due to keeping the MLO file on a storage device on the PPC that could also be used as a USB storage device. If I left MLO running on the PPC and connected to a PC as a storage device rather than Activesync the MLO lost its connection to the data file. It appeared to run normally for a few days, but crashed when I tried to close it or if its buffer filled up, causing the loss of the data since the last save.
I have to remember to close MLO before using the phone this way. Not sure if it relates to your problem, but it might help.
