I'm wondering if this is just not possible without Outlook itself
changing (to accept folder-less links and be able to locate them
without a folder, or to send back a folder-change message to MLO when
that happens).

But I may be wrong: does anyone know of another app that communicates
in a folder-less way with Outlook?
