Thanks for the excellent explanation, Pottster! I understand the structure now and will have to play with it. I've been planning things out with the outline, so have been enforcing a hierarchy of colors using the more obvious Formatting section in the Properties pane for that, as it's easy and intuitive for me to follow the big picture that way.
I do like the idea of active tasks going green, though they seemed to be going green based on the level during input, as there were no start dates yet. Will have to play with it to see how it all works now that I have a clearer understanding. I'm still trying to figure out what's what at this point. It would be great to have alternate formats for a file in order to be able to flip back and forth from a plan view having consistent color-coded levels (non- distracting) over to a working view where the focus is on the active tasks, with conditional highlighting.
