Ok, not what you asked for but you can use a different font for active and
non-active tasks and folders.  I use Arial for the active tasks and Courier
new (a much lighter font) for hidden and future tasks.  The non-current
tasks do not disappear but they do move into the background in the outline
view.  You could add a rule for "empty folders" to do something similar

Condition:
start date time after now

Format:
Font - courier new

Hidden

Condition:
not isfolder and
HiddeinToDo

Format:
Font - courier new

You could add the following.
Add
Rule name:
Empty Folder

Condition:
isFolder And
Has subtasks false

Format:
Font - courier new
