OK, that's an advantage of Windows 7 - the icon next to the start button get's highlighted when MLO is open, rather than an extra, rectangular button appearing for the open program. Windows 7 has a few other features for saving space and grouping items on the Taskbar, too.
Of course, it will be all change as we start to move to Windows 8 Live Tiles and touch screens.
