The 'Alternative complete' feature might be what you are looking for if you
wanted to come back into your to do list immediately. I rarely do, so the way
I handle this type of tasks is to make the recurrence reflect when I would
like to reevaluate the task's next date. I use, "recur X days/weeks/months
after this task is completed"

for example, I have "do laundry" set to recur 10 days after it is
completed, and "exercise" set to recur one day after it is completed.
However, if I want to push this date out, I edit the start date in the
recurrence options to get it out of my list. (I really love to see a "next
day/next week" option for this type of occurrence instead of just for
nonrecurring tasks, but it is doable).
