Thanks! I think you are right. I hadn't been following the stars because it wasn't clear at the workspace level which views were changed. So I would change a view (which would star the workspace), then switch views and forget which view I had changed in that workspace.
I just figured out that I can tell which views are modified by clicking on the subject column header (which I never looked at before) and then looking for the stars.
