I don't know a way to turn them off completely, but instead of the - 
sometimes annoying  - standard "reminder window" you can set the reminders 
to appear in the form of very quick notifications that disappear 
automatically. To do so you simply have to 1-set a random reminder 2-press 
on the "link" below that says "Alerts: Desktop alert ; Play sound". 2-Check 
Show desktop alert and uncheck "Activate in Remiders windows" 4-Press "Save 
as default"

And you are done

The new configuration will work for all new reminders that you will set 
from now on, but for the already existing remiders you will have to 
reconfigure them manually one by one.
