Hi, Does anyone have experience of large numbers of tasks/projects etc, and MLO slowing down or crashing/corrupting as a result?

I'm the ultimate hoarder. I don't delete or archive anything, and I've been using MLO for about 10 years.

I have two major MLO files: one for home and one for work. According to Properties...

Home = 11,773 Total to-do items
Work = 27,843 Total to-do items

I have megabytes of notes in each file: 7.3 MB in Home and 9.3 MB in Work.

Effectively I (mis-)use MLO as a repository for everything I've ever done, in case I have to do it again.

On my PC both files open within a second or two and are lightning fast to do anything I've needed. My hardware is about the same as yours (16 GB RAM and a lesser processor; MLO files on non-SSD media or an encrypted USB stick).

I'm pretty sure that over many years the only crashes have been caused by other apps or the OS, and I don't think I've lost so much as a single byte of data that I've been adding. Keeping copious MLO backups configured in the options has helped. I cannot think of another app that has been so rock steady and reliable.

I sync my home MLO file with Android, and there it's not so clear cut. To open the file and get to the "All Tasks" view for searching through everything takes about 30 seconds. That might be unacceptable for some, but I only use the phone to add new items to Inbox (takes no time at all) or look up something from my years of collected cruft. For me, the 30-second trade off is worth it. Searching/filtering, once all tasks are loaded, takes less time than the typing.
