You sound to me like you are using MLO on a desktop system, probably Windows. Is that right? If not, please ignore the remainder of my message, and write back telling me what kind or phone or computer you are on.

Your system contains an outline (all of your tasks arranged in a hierarchical list) and views. Each view is filtered, grouped, and sorted according to its own specifications. I don't know if there is really a default view, but maybe you mean "All Tasks" - this is a view that shows all of your tasks in the same order as how they are stored in the outline. If you are looking at the "All Tasks" view and you move a task, you are physically moving it to a different part of the outline. If you are looking at a sorted view and you move a a task, you are probably not changing the outline, but rather changing the sort.

If things changed for you recently, there are a few things that could be the cause.

For one thing, maybe you have not really been paying attention to views, and have been using "All Tasks" for the last many years, and somehow now you have gotten switched to a sorted view.

Troubleshooting instructions:

1. When you look at the MLO screen do you see a sidebar on the left? If not, hold down ALT and tap F1 and it will appear. If you don't know whether you have the sidebar, hold down ALT and hit F1 about a dozen times. You will see the sidebar flashing on and off. Stop hitting F1 while the sidebar is visible.

2. OK, now we know that you have the sidebar visible. Look at the sidebar title. It's at the top left, under the toolbars. On my system it's just under a big blue button called "New Task." The title either says "Views" or it has the name of a view, like "All Tasks". If it says "Views" then click right on the word "Views" and it will change to a view name

3. OK, now we have a view name as the sidebar title. The view name you see should be the name of the view you are using. Is it "All Tasks"? If not, click on the view name to change it to "Views" then scan down through the listed views until you find "All Tasks" and click on it. Your main view should now be showing the All Tasks view and the sidebar title should say All Tasks.

4. The sidebar should have eight or so sections. They probably do not all fit on your screen at once, so use the scrollbar at the right edge of the sidebar to scroll up and down. See if you can pick out where the sections begin and end. The first line of each section is the section header and starts with a three bar "move handle" and a triangle (called a twistie) that can point down or to the right. find the section header that says "Group & Sort". Click on the twistie about a dozen times. You will notice that the section is expanding and collapsing. Stop clicking while it is expanded and leave it expanded.

5. In the expanded Group & Sort section find a button that says "Sort..." and click it. You will get a pop-up "Sorting" window. Your display should now look like this:

In the "sorting" pop up in the sample above you will see four entries that all say "(none)". Is that what you see on your system? If any of the four shows anything other than "(none)" you should click on it and change it right away to "(none)".

OK, now we know that you are looking at the All Tasks view and that it is not sorted. I am guessing that this is the view that you are used to and that it will behave the way you want. If this is not all true, please write back and tell me where I lost you.

If everything is ok now, I would encourage you to go back to the VIEWS display and explore some of the other predefined views, and maybe experiment a little with modifying some of the views to make them better fit your needs. Or you could just go on using just the All Tasks view.

Having written all of this I feel entitled to make a suggestion even though it's really none of my business. I apologize if you don't want suggestions, or if I have made incorrect assumptions about what you are doing or what you need. But if you have MLO and you are just using the All Tasks view, that would be, to me, like buying a Lamborghini and hooking up a team of donkeys to pull it down the highway. You should look into the powerful machine you are sitting on and you might be pleasantly surprised by what it can do for you.

BTW, what's a "PM" and in what subject were you a professor?

I would have to say the default view.  I may have made a settings change by accident.  I have used the same view for years, and I cannot get back to that being my default view.

I do appreciate your help.  I’m not a PM.  Just an old college prof that likes to stay organized.

Is there some screen shot that might help you help me?

Are you always looking at the same view when this happens? If so, what is the name of the view?

Likely something I have done by accident.

No matter how many times I fix the tasks in place, the outline keeps going back to some preset order.  I must have activated something.  I just want things to stay where I put them.

Thank you in advance for your time.
