Follow-up Comment #2, bug #14875 (project mypaint):

PNG as default for single-layer image is just fine. But for multi-layered
images that will result in a permanent loss of information. So I think that
we should definitely have a dialog telling the user this. I personally even
think the dialog should angle him/her towards OpenRaster due to this.

I also think that the switch for default format should be in the file saving
dialog itself. So that it is obvious that you can change it, and how you do
it.
I'm thinking in the lines of a check-box for "always use this format"/"use
this format by default" next to the drop down with file formats.
Above dialog should also contain a hint about this.

And we should probably work a harder for good OpenRaster integration in
common desktop environments. Which platforms is it impossible to implement
OpenRaster thumbnailing and default file association?

David: We have that in the form of "save as scap" allready. However, there
might be room for improvement here (make it more obvious what it does, and
how to change the scrap path et.c.). But its unreleated to this issue. Please
feel free to pick it up in the wiki, IRC or as a separate issue here tho!
