Follow-up Comment #2, bug #15020 (project mypaint):
Yes, we have no reliable way to save "the brush that was selected in the
GUI", we only save the brush settings (which include size, color, etc.).
I was thinking about adding some kind of "parent brush(es)" into the brush
settings to allow much better guessing which brush was selected (usually the
first parent, and if it doesn't exist the second parent, etc.).
Simpler solutions welcome...
