I think the parent brush approach is the one to take.
It'd be nice to have some sort of brief on-screen feedback when a brush
changes like this - and that includes brushkey and tool id changes. Perhaps a
notification popup of some sort, out of the way in a corner, with icons for
colour, parent brush, opacity, size? Alternatively, some sort of "has
changes" marker for displaying over a single brush preview icon.
If we do the latter, the brush selection window could be updated when someone
brushkeys, flips their pen or whatever. If the associated settings contains
deltas from the parent brush, highlight the parent brush anyway in the
selection window and also show the marker on top of it.
