Follow-up Comment #1:
Partially confirmed. On Linux/Debian/Metacity the wait cursor works for me
when I use Ctrl-S or File->Save, both git and 0.9.0. I got some situation
where it doesn't work with Save As, and probably depending on whether there is
a "confirm overwrite" dialog or not.
To fix the real problem instead of the symptoms, I think we should make a
reliable "save done" feedback that works even if saving took almost zero
time.
For example, show the wait cursor for at least 0.3 second even if saving was
faster. Or have a temporary popup in some corner.
