Follow-up Comment #9, bug #17739 (project mypaint):

Ok more noise from me: I looked at the python bugreport again. Looks like the
problem exists only if the filename contains characters that are /not/
representable in the system's native encoding. So for most usecases, we should
be fine.

In the rare case when the file system can't encode the filename, we have
problems in several other places (eg. when saving). There isn't really much
point to go so far to load the file correctly if it can't be saved afterwards.
