Follow-up Comment #10, bug #18421 (project mypaint):
I've added a background save function to the autosave branch:

(quite a big set of changes, but really only two or three major chunks,
heavily interrelated).
Saving like this doesn't seem to impact my drawing on this machine, even for
very large files. Note that we still don't split up thumbnail generation, but
it doesn't look as if we really have to. There's more overhead with this setup
than with a threaded approach, and the chunks of work are variably sized, but
it seems OK here. Let me know how this branch feels when an autosave kicks
in.
We could use a device like this for performing normal saves in the
background, provided there's some proper feedback to the user in more "UI-ish"
modes of operation, and provided the idle saver for any real saves is allowed
to complete before quitting. Cutting the save time to near-zero in the middle
of flow: *that* would be a nice feature.
