XMPP, but I did exchange some emails with the author, and I can tell you this
needs some careful design thoughts.
Serializing strokes is easy, replaying them in realtime too (at least in
MyPaint). But creating a collaborative canvas where several users edit the
same file... there is much more to this than just serializing strokes and send
them over network. Just think about undo, or what happens when both users use
a smudge brush and the strokes do cross each other.
Also, you'd probably want some built-in chat, servers, etc...
I think this is out of scope for MyPaint.
