Follow-up Comment #8, bug #20317 (project mypaint): I have extended my implementation a bit (based on your changes) to include a 'preview' overlay which indicates the visible screen region.
Follow my branch at https://github.com/alown/mypaint/commits/preview I seem to have made a slight mistake during the coordinate mapping though because the overlay is too square in comparison to my actual mypaint window, and the rotations don't quite seem to line up. Anyway, take a look.
