Follow-up Comment #3:
There's nothing we can do about putting the toolbar preferences into the menu
before 1.1.0: it would require the addition of a new string for the submenu.
I've tried to concentrate on making the defaults more sensible instead: see
ba6ba5ab on master

and its parent couple of commits). It includes a few of your suggestions - let
me know what you think.
