I don't think we need to fix anything here. We can't fix anything at all in
MyPaint 1.0.0, and unless we completely change the format again, newer brushes
will just work.
Except for unsupported settings, which will be "silently" ignored (we actually
do print a complaint to stdout). If the brush format has changed so much that
it's incompatible, we revert the brush to the default brush, which is a pretty
clear "it's not compatible, sorry" message to the user.
If we would be showing a dialog instead, you would see that dialog every damn
time at startup until you figure out which file/brush/devbrush you have to
remove - not much nicer for users.
So, I think the current solution is pragmatic and should work well for 90% of
the use cases.
