I do have a vague plan for this area. I want the brush+layer picker and
preview stuff in the bottom right corner, and access to a switchable colour
popup in the bottom left. Pickers are commonly used tools, so it makes
sense to put them in the screen corners. Layout from left to right might be

  0. Pick color (bottom left)
  1. Color current/previous, with popup switchable adjusters on the
"current" half
  2. Color "bookmark" button (save to working palette, display palette
panel)
  3. Current mode icon and toolbar texts (fluid width)
  4. Brush "bookmark" button (save working brush to Favorites, display
Favourites brush group panel)
  5. Interactive brush settings popup (see below)
  6. Brush preview icon, with popup switchable presets selector when clicked
  7. Brush and layer picker (bottom right)

I want it fairly symmetrical and self-illustrating.

It would be really nice to have an upward-facing triangle near the "brush
chooser" for adjusting its settings interactively. I'm really uncertain
about how to design this, but I've recently pushed code for making preview
pixbufs of brushes using interpolated stroke data and I've been playing
with a stroke "tweaker" canvas in private for adjusting settings by click
and drag on the stroke. Pondering now how visual we can get it.

More vague plan: I also want to junk the dropdowns for brush and colour
selection, replacing them with an improved footer bar. Thoughts?
