Upgrades are always scary. Don't you have another server (staging) with same hardware/packages so you can try there first before doing it in production?

yes, I know that. For minor releases - 5.x to 5.x+n - we'll use in-place upgrades,
for major release upgrades - 5.x to 6.x - we'll use a different hosts.
