(beginner) mysql connection problem!

Hi everyone,

On my local machine I had mysql installed, and I was able to log in and doing a test on it.
but today as I am trying to login using >mysql or >mysql -u root -p, I got the error message saying; ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2), I had not touch the setting of the mysql at all. What should I do to solve this problem?? Thank you all for your help.
