It's not the only way according to the Gentoo handbook; the description for emake says: "Some packages cannot be made in parallel; use emake -j1 instead." Sometimes it pays to RTFM.

However, it is the only way to build Myth in parallel, which is what my original post said. Building in parallel is considerably faster on slow machines where you have distcc installed and a couple of other (much faster) machines on the network.
