I see similar behavior. My suspicion was (is) that the cable box is being choosy about when to make a signal available. For example, I think it doesn't output anything if it's recording anything itself on either of its two tuners.
To verify this, I am looking for another device to use for snooping the firewire bus when the Myth box is getting nothing. I would be happy to learn that this is actually caused by bugs in the Myth stack somewhere.
