Check to see if your IDE controller is using the same interrupt as your tuner card. cat /proc/interrupts I had something like this bite me earlier this week where my HDTV tuner was sharing an interrupt with my ethernet controller. Needless to say, a netbooted machine wasn't able to run smoothly while running an HD recording.
