That's an interesting question I just had... do most X apps assume square pixels? In the analog video world, since each horizontal line is determined by analog bandwidth, the aspect ratio isn't determined. It's carried over to produce such confusions asSet your DisplaySize attribute in your X config, as discussed frequently on this list.
4:3 DVD in 352x240, 352x480, 704x480, 720x480 16:9 DVD in 352x240, 352x480, 704x480, 720x480 "Widescreen Letterbox" "Anamorphic Widescreen" etc, etc.
I'm assuming that most applications assume square pixels and a 4:3 screen (640x480, 1024x768, 1600x1200, etc), but they supposedly *could* check the DisplaySize attribute to find out "for sure?" Maybe I'll have to stop badmouthing the 1280x1024 resolution since it's not 4:3... :)
