The main fan connected to the heat pipe is a standard size. You might consider replacing it with one from

http://www.directron.com/quietfans.html

Take a look at the sound level ratings provided there. Also note if the CFM is way less than your original fan then you may have heat issues. I haven't bought a replacement for mine, but thats more a matter of not wanting to spend the money on it.

One thing you can do that I won't go so far to recommend but that does work somewhat with the shuttle cubes is to cut out the aluminum back plate fan cover. I believe it has hex shaped holes in it. The reason this helps somewhat is that covering acts to disturb the normal flow of air and in so doing creates some noise. The again I didn't do any elaborate tests before and after so your mileage may vary. At the very least it does improve the air flow somewhat. Of course doing so will void your cases warranty and the procedure is not without some risk. It would probably be best to remove the motherboard and all the internal components before doing this, although I left the motherboard in when I did it and just very carefully cut out the outline with a dremel cut off wheel being sure to use a little compressed air to blow out any dust. I cleaned and reapplied heat sink compound to the cpu when done since I had the heat pipe out. I can email someone a picture if they want. Again its not a huge thing, but I think its quieter that way and maybe a little cooler.

I have a shuttle (IC-VL67) p4 2.6 that I use as frontend/backend.

only regrets i have are the noise level, (I can hear the box in the
next room) and there's only 1 pci slot (i'd like to have a couple pvr
cards in there).

the noise level for me is really annoying.

I've been looking for a Shuttle system to be a frontend box. My
requirements are P4 3.2ghz, dual DDR 400mhz, AC3/SPDIF that works under
Linux and as cheap as possible. Other than working well, that's it.
Has anyone had experience with the Shuttle SB75S, SB65G2, or SB61G2V3?
They are all selling for about $200 and I'm wondering if everything will
work well (Especially AC3/SPDIF output). Or, if anyone knows of
something better and cheaper than shuttles..

Thanks,
