I wish I could say. I saw this part when I looked for Rich, but Maplins doesn't give enough in the way of details to know how it will work in your circuit.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about electronics supliers in the UK, but I see that Farnell (uk.farnell.com) is your equivalent to our Newark (US). And appropriate part from them would be a Vishay TSOP4838 for 74p. It's 5V, low current, easy to hook up, and filter out anything that's not around 38kHz (standard remote freq). But they'll probably kill you on shipping and handling for that order.

Are there any other shops or supply houses in the UK? I'd be willing to take a look for you gentlemen.

Subject: RE: [mythtv-users] Internal IR Receiver

Rich Asked:

Has anyone implemented an internal infra red receiver for use with lirc? I
want to have a unit internally housed in my
myth box, modifying the front of the case to allow the signal through.
Anyone achieved this or know of a site with some
information on parts required? I'm in the UK, so I guess maplins will be a
source of parts for such a venture.

On a slightly similar note, I've got a Asus Pundit-R which has two (blue)
LED's that shine through a clear plastic
strip that runs the height of the case, there is plenty of room to stick
something there and I plan to stick a IR
receiver in there[1].

It's also nice because the Pundit-R has a serial port with a header cable so
it would be possible to do it without
having to run a cable out and back in[2].

I'm rather stuck though at what IR detector to buy atm though, I mean would
Maplin part CH11M be suitable?

Actually looking at it I might get one anyway and have a try as they're only
39p!!

[1] And stick some more LED's behind it to show tuner/recording/backend
status.
[2] Although I have plans to l/c it which would stick big tubes out but
nevermind ;-)
