I am just using it for playing recorded mpegs (previously

Then you don't need MythTV. Using any old machine with
linux or winderz will work for your purposes.

Can I do without the back end?

As much as I hate to say this, you don't need the frontend either.
But yes, if you want to use a frontend only configuration,
there is no need for a backend if you don't need to record
or access any of the cool extras (as you've noted).

Well, yes, we could all do without MythTV and use the tools on their own, but MythTV provides a nice, simple interface for doing many different things - simple enough for non-computer people to use. This is the main attraction for me. I can put it in my living room and connect it to my TV and it isn't like your using a computer, but just another piece of a/v equipment...just like the ReplayTV.

Are you saying that the only value of MythTV is in the TV scheduling and recording? I beg to differ.... ;)

I do, however, understand that the TV scheduling and recording are the main attraction for some, but it would be nice if you could (easily) remove those functions and just use the other functions, since they are certainly very useful.

Of course, I may eventually move out of China, or get cable with international channels, or learn Chinese....so maybe I will eventually get a tuner card or something :)

Max.
