I used to get dropped frames until I dedicated a seperate drive to MythTV recordings, occasionally still do when the drive gets full.
Also, check that DMA is enabled on the hard drive for where the recordings (and live tv is buffered) reside. (man hdparm) > 2) The slow playback occurs when I am trying to watch > live TV.
