color depth is a good idea, doubt I would have thought to suggest that one

the higher the bitrate the less compression the encoder perform, but the more 
storage the recording takes up, so better picture quality

however, keep in mind the higher bitrates will eventually be to much for the 
speed at which your system can record it to the hard drive(s), then you get 
dropped frames -- much worse than blocky (yet) uninterrupted video

lowering your resolution from say 720x480 to 480x480 means less detail (more 
blockiness) but that also means less data to be stored by the hard drive (less 
chance of dropped frames)
