FWIW, here is my experience with "free" cable. When I moved into my apartment I did not set up cable service. One day shortly after moving in I connected up a TV to the cable outlet and behold, I had cable. This continued for over a year, until one sad day I came home to find a note on my door. It said something like "Oops, we think we left your cable on by mistake. We'd like nothing more than to hook it back up for you, for only 49.99 a month. You will not be charged for previous cable service." Although it was tough, I didn't sign up for cable. It's hard to shell out 50 bucks a month for something you got for free for over a year. After that we had the aforementioned "cable scraps" from time to time, sometimes all the way up to channel 46. Then, the day before the Super Bowl, I saw a Comcast van in the complex and there were no more cable scraps (most likely due to a filter that was discussed earlier). This may coincide with them offering a "Basic Cable" package for 15 dollars a month that they didn't offer before. I didn't really feel guilty about watching the cable service when I was getting free cable. If they left it turned on for my apartment when they could have blocked it, I had no problems watching. Anyway, just wanted to add my experience to the thread.
