I'll let someone else answer ATSC vs. DVB, but an oversimplification is ATSC is North American HDTV and DVB is the Digital Broadcast standard for most of the world (with a little in the US) and can be over-the-air (DVB-T), cable (DVB-C) or satellite (DVB-S).The DVB-based solution could be more flexible in the long run, but
when I tested about two weeks ago, there was so much driver
instability that it was tough to grab all the parts that work
together.
So, lets back up a second and define what ATSC and DVB mean and if
there is any difference. What are the technical differences between
the two cards (Air2PC/HD3000) beyond driver issues and stability
within myth? Are their any?
But what you are really asking isn't ATSC vs. DVB. It is video4linux drivers vs. DVB drivers. pcHDTV releases video4linux drivers for their cards. Some people, me included, feel the DVB driver structure makes for a cleaner interface when dealing with ATSC cards. The Air2PC card mentioned above is *not* a DVB card although it is based on the same technology as some DVB cards. The Air2PC card just happens to use the Linux DVB infrastructure. There are new drivers written by someone whos name escapes me right now (search the archives) that took the pcHDTV driver and modified it for the DVB driver interface. This is the HD3000 DVB driver. It isn't saying that it is a DVB card, just that it uses the DVB infrastructure. Confusing isn't it ;-) .
Getting to your last question. I have the pcHDTV HD-2000, HD-3000, and the Air2PC. I haven't done a lot of testing with the HD-3000, but the Air2PC seems to perform a lot better receiving stations than the HD-2000. I can pick up an additional 3 digital stations with a directional antenna on the Air2PC that had unusable signal with the HD-2000.
There is more discussion on all this in the archives. http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/
