I had a TV, the RCA, which though it was internally a 1280 x 720 DLP, would
not take 720p on its inputs. It took it over the air, but who knows what it
did with it.

This struck me as ridiculous. To display 720p in Myth, I had to upconvert it
to 1080i, and the TV would then convert it back to 720 internally, and it looked
terrible.

The TV went back. Don't buy a TV that won't take 720p if you plan to use
Mythtv.

Frankly, I am not sure why nbc, cbs, UPN and WB are broadcasting in 1080i right
now. A few people have TVs with 1080 lines, but it's a small part of
market and thus the advantages of 720p should win out. Fox and ABC have it
right.

So far as well no station changes their resolution from show to show. Down the
road, it would make sense to do sports at 720p and nature shows at 1080i, but
they
must not think the TVs can handle it.

Also annoying is that the SDTV shows which are broadcast at HD on one channel
and
SD on an SD subchannel look a fair bit worse on the SD subchannel. They must be
cutting the quality or something to save bandwidth.

It means if you want the best quality recoding, you end up recording an SD show
at 1080i, black bars and everything!
