Here's the error I have:

Check Mixer Name in Setup: /dev/mixer
You have the 'use internal volume control' checked with an ALSA device.
This wasn't supported in 0.16 (it just ignored the mixer for ALSA).
Version 0.17 now supports using the internal volume control with ALSA,
however you need to set the mixer to the string 'default' (without the
quotes). This has been convered on this list a few times already.
