My playback seemed to be quite choppy as well.  I have been following
and updating CVS on a regular basis, so I don't know why it happened
after the .17 release.  But what seemed to fix it for me was to set suid
on /usr/bin/mythfrontend and /usr/bin/mythtv again, since installing the
new version will overwrite them.  And make sure in your setup you have
the realtime threads option turned on.
