It sounds to me like the easiest way to make the current behavior match the old behavior for recording-failed HDTV (from an interface point of view) would be to have it write a 0 byte file if the reception check fails. In 0.16, nothing would display, but the recording would be deletable and cancellable, which is at least functional.
Does anyone out there who knows the HD reception/recording code care to take a stab at a quick hack? I may have some time to look this weekend, though I also need to debug why 0.17 broke recording things that get reception...
