I don't know if my experience will help, but I just
got SPDIF working on my 0.17 box yesterday. In my
case, the secret was to specify ALSA:spdif (caps
important) as the audio output device instead of
/dev/dsp. Also, I had to DISABLE the volume control
via myth checkbox because it didn't like the
/dev/mixer device when using SPDIF.
