All information about your music, video, and pictures are stored in a database. So it is not possible to run the myth frontend without having at least the database set up. You can do this locally on the mac if that is were you are planning on storing the media files, however most people will set this up on another pc where they have more storage space. To do that you have to make sure your mini mac is part of your home network.
