Thanks for the replies guys... Your guide is the one I've spent the most
time with, since it seems to fit in with what I'm doing the best.

As it stands I've removed everything and started over with your guide,
trying to follow everything to the letter.

LIRC doesn't seem to do much of anything.. I'm only going to use it for ir
blasters, as I have a wireless keyboard and will get a learning remote.
However I do have an infared receiver, and couldn't get it to do anything
using /usr/bin/irw either. But since that's not what I want to use lirc
for, I removed it and plugged the ir blaster into the com port instead.
(straying from the topic a bit, I don't understand how you run both an ir
receiver *and* the blasters from one instance of lirc that's been configured
for a specific com port, when you can't plug them both into the same com
port... although it doesn't really apply here to me since I won't be using
an ir receiver anyway)

Here's what I've done so far... (I hope it's appropriate to post all this
to the list... my apologies for such a long winded email here everybody..)

[EMAIL PROTECTED] /]# rpm -qa lirc*
lirc-lib-devel-0.7.0-43.rhfc3.at

For /etc/lircd.conf I downloaded and renamed this file:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] /]# cat /etc/rc.d/rc.local

The channel changing script is a direct copy and paste of the one listed on
your webpage. (so is the relevant stuff above)

Here's a list of my /dev/lirc*

Here's what I get when I try to run the channel change script:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] /]# /usr/local/bin/change_chan.sh 110
irsend: could not connect to socket
irsend: Connection refused
irsend: could not connect to socket
irsend: Connection refused
irsend: could not connect to socket
irsend: Connection refused
irsend: could not connect to socket
irsend: Connection refused

And just typing the command myself:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] bin]# irsend --device=/dev/lircd1 SEND_ONCE 3100 5
irsend: could not connect to socket
irsend: Connection refused

If I use --device=/dev/lircd instead of lircd1, (and i'm not sure that I
should have even bothered trying that, but I'm out of ideas) I don't get
the error, but don't seem to get anything out of the blaster either.
Nothing happens to the satellite receiver, and don't see anything on my
digital camera display. (i pointed my real dish remote at the camera and it
lit up, so I guess it's safe to say nothing is coming from the blaster.)

I've tried plugging the ir blaster into both of my com ports, and tried
setting up modprobe.conf for both com1 and com2. Everything I've tried has
resulted in the same errors listed above.

Thanks so much for any help guys... It might just keep me sane for another
day!
