My FC3/nVidia 7174 system just had a similar problem
freezing on the kde spalsh screen (the words "starting up interprocess
communication") just sat there.
After an hour of messing around, I deleted the .kde
directory in the home folder (ie rm -rf /root/.kde) and it started up
fine.
